The Central Coast Loop includes one of the three best stretches of the Oregon coast for bicycling. We ride from just south of Lincoln City to Florence and it is "beach view on your right" almost all of the way.
There are not too many climbs on this route and none of them are over a 1000' so this is a pretty easy ride as far as the terrain goes but the route is long - with three days that finish up at just under 60 miles. We ride along Hwy 101 for about 70 miles so anyone going on this tour should be comfortable riding with vacation bound traffic. It is good to do this tour late in the season to minimize the traffic.
We start this tour with an early Thursday afternoon departure from Portland. This gives us enough time to drive down to Salem and setup for a short evening ride out to our camp.
On Friday even though we are crossing the Coast Range, we only have two climbs to do and both of them are less than 500'. Most of the day is an easy ride down the Siletz River. That evening we camp along the river just short of reaching the coastline.
Saturdays ride if the jewel of the weekend. Beautiful beaches, post card perfect lighthouse views, and easy riding- what more could you ask for? Except for one little hill it is a pretty flat ride all day long. Our route takes us through the small towns of Depoe Bay, Newport, Waldport, and Yachats where you will want to stop and check out the local flavor.
On Sunday morning we finish up our ride along the coast at Florence and head inland following the Siuslaw River up into the hills. The ride is a pretty easy grade along the Siuslaw River for the first part of the day. It's a nice ride following the river as we climb up through the forest. After Lunch we follow Lake Creek up to our camp site for the evening at the Lake Creek Recreation Site.
For most of Monday's ride we drop down out the Coast Range - except for one small climb that we hit in the morning. It's an 800 foot climb up High Pass Road and then a fun downhill down the other side. We ride out into the Willamette Valley to Junction City where we will get cleaned up before our ride back into Portland.
