The Oregon Coast ride is, by far, the most popular multi-day ride in Oregon… and that is for good reason. Riding south on Highway 101 provides spectacular views of the Oregon coastline for miles at a time.
The availability of motel, food, and full service camping on Highway 101 makes it easy for all types of bicycle tours to do the Oregon Coast. Self supported individual riders, private groups, and commercial tours all can easily do all or part of the Oregon Coast ride.
Riding border to border from Astoria to Brookings along the Oregon coastline, we complete this 373 mile in 7 days with another day to travel back to Portland.
Many people planning to ride the Oregon Coast are surprised to learn that the ride is not always “an easy ride at sea level.” The ride includes three climbs of close to 1000 feet and a number of lesser climbs. In fact, the total vertical climb over the week is 16,000 feet.
Many are also surprised to learn that the ride is not always on the coast and within sight of the beach. Three sections of the ride, comprising about half of the distance, are spent riding on, or near, the coastline. These three sections are the Cannon Beach to Tillamook, Depoe Bay to Reedsport, and Port Orford to Brookings coastlines. The other half of the ride is spent riding though forests, coastal lowland and pasture land, and through lots of little towns.
We make this ride from North to South to take advantage of the prevailing winds. The best time of year to do this ride is in late August to early October. This is when the combination of moderate temperatures, prevailing winds, low precipitation, and reduced highway traffic combine to make for a more enjoyable tour.
We camp in developed campgrounds with showers all along the way. Making it to the next developed campground can be a challenge at times so the daily mileages range from 35 to 77 miles.
On the shorter mileage days we make some extended stops to enjoy the local towns and attractions. One one day we will stop at the Oregon Coast Aqurium in Newport.
With the emphasis on tourism up and down the coastline there are many options for enjoying other events and activities. A nineth day can easily be added to this tour to accommodate a layover/activity day.
